My Journey

What is my YAGM year? At the end of April, I accepted a call to serve as a volunteer for the ELCA's Young Adults in Global Mission program (YAGM). There are 84 other young adults (ages 21-29) who will be serving in 11 countries as a part of this program. YAGM is a year-long journey of international service...and honestly, the website says it best:
"As they offer themselves in service, ELCA young adults are shaped by the witness of our global neighbors. They share in the journeys of companion churches and organizations in one of [eleven] countries around the world.
"A year of service through the [YAGM] program invites young adults to become the hands and feet of Jesus in the world, providing critical support to ministries and projects in communities of need. It also invites volunteers into a journey of self-reflection, providing space to consider their sense of identity, God's work in the world, and their place within it all.
"Young adults serve in the spirit of accompaniment, walking alongside global companions in a manner that practices mutuality, interdependence, and solidarity."
I have the opportunity to serve in Cambodia; my placement is with an public health NGO called RACHA which focuses on community health programming, making health care safe, available, accessible, and sustainable. They have a particular emphasis on maternal and child health. This placement is especially special to me, as I'm planning on entering the public health field and doing a similar vein of work.

As mentioned, my mission is a mission of accompaniment and of solidarity. As I live out each day, I will seek to learn from the culture and the community of people in Cambodia. This will be a year of challenge, discovery, and growth. It's a walk of faith. I'm eager to see what it brings.
